Today, there are role-based communication systems that allow for collaborative messaging and sharing capabilities, one-to-one, groups, and mass notification.  They provide secure and private data storage and offer robust sharing capabilities.  Some are standalone, others provide solid integrated solutions.  On top of it all, they are tools that can be used operationally in addition to the time of emergency or crisis.  And even affordable, some even at no cost.

Collaboration and communication are often the Achilles heel of a crisis.  It is imperative to be in touch with the entire security environment.  The outcomes can be amazing.

Preventative measures are a key aspect of security; from the police, security personnel, government authorities, and other first responders. Connecting the environment’s users to all the other stakeholders requires an integrated and collaborative approach. There is a need to communicate effectively by providing notices, alerts, daily operational communication requirements, etc.

Lessons learned have shown that it is essential to have well-established collaboration and communication protocols in place. Not only is this effective for day-to-day operations (BAU), but it becomes essential during an emergency and or crisis.

Today’s collaboration and communication tools can bring a security environment together. This will often require an organization to look beyond traditional tools.

The security approach itself may need to change. It should incorporate the capabilities of emerging or new technologies and through proven approaches, integrate lessons learned.

The ability exsists to allow persoonel to communicate not only instances of insider threat and other critical information; but this can also include essential information for operational reason, and those notifications can go to specific departments.  


A siloed approach does not work in today’s world. Enabling the right information to get to the right personnel is essential in any environment. Collaboration can provide effective outcomes.  Appropriate managers and users can provide timely information to all or selected personnel, tenants and even the public for the most routine information for customer service to heightened situations, emergency or crisis issues.  It is all about the engagement of responsibility and working together within the environment for public safety.  It’s everyone responsibility in today’s world.

Emergency & Crisis

Managing information in a crisis is notoriously difficult because of the inherent uncertainty surrounding events.  The challenges are exacerbated by workload, stress, and the need to maintain situational awareness. When an emergency or crisis does occur, it is not the time for personnel to learn procedures, protocols, or the system.  Being competently trained with an effective communication platform is vital to enable real-time coordination. Comprehensive unified communication offers better management and can provide the less negative impact of an event.

In major crisis events, we have seen mass evacuation and prolific social media communication. Proper interface and reaction to maintain control is critical.

Situational Awareness

Good situational awareness in the environment can provide enhanced coordination. Having a common operating picture and being able to share that awareness accurately, effectively and in a timely manner is a key aspect to staying ahead operationally in times of crisis. Technologies can support shared situational awareness. Shared situational awareness can be achieved by the integration of various tools, from computer-aided dispatching to effective movement information and social-media on a role-based requirement. Informed communication is critical in any operational environment. In a time of an emergency or crisis that requirement is heightened.
