Any organization may nominate an individual for an honor; however, the nominee must meet the established criteria for the specific Medal or Award.
How to Nominate
Who Deserves an Honor?
Honors recognize and celebrate outstanding achievement. Because they are rare, they should be reserved for those who exemplify the very best — extraordinary and distinguished efforts and accomplishments.
- Who have visioned, implemented, and accomplished extraordinary and practical achievements
- Whose work has brought distinction to their Country, global community, policing, and public safety
- Enhancing the reputation of their authority, government, country, and area of activity
Ceremony & Logistics
The annual 9/11 Ceremony is typically held on the Friday afternoon preceding the Saturday opening of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference.
The nominating agency should arrange transportation and travel for the recipient. We strongly encourage honorees to remain for the IACP Conference for educational seminars and professional development opportunities.
For international recipients, IACP hosts special events and receptions for global delegates. We will assist in coordinating participation to ensure a meaningful and welcoming experience.
After You Nominate
Citation Guidance
The most important thing is to provide evidence of what the nominee has done and how they have made things better for others. There is no right or wrong way to write a nomination.
A good nomination should:
- Tell the story of what your candidate has done — give vivid and precise examples
- Show how they contributed distinctively through sustained and selfless service
- Demonstrate innovation or creativity in delivering lasting results
- Describe how things were before they began and how they are now
- Explain what makes your candidate different from others doing the same thing
- Show how they earned the respect of peers and became a role model
- Include letters from people who know the nominee personally and from first-hand experience
A nomination should NOT be:
- ✕An extended CV
- ✕A list of educational achievements
- ✕A list of appointments, awards, or posts
- ✕A job description showing what the person is meant to do
Only the strongest nominations will result in an honor. The honors committee judges candidates' merits solely on the information provided. A good nomination is the foundation for a successful case.
