Celebrating a Milestone: New Membership for Puntland Maritime Police Force
On February 18, 2024, a significant ceremony was held in Bosaso, Puntland State of Somalia, marking the welcoming of the Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) as the latest member of the INTERPORTPOLICE. This momentous occasion signifies an important step toward strengthening maritime security collaboration and enhancing national and regional safety.
Acknowledgment and Recognition
During the ceremony, Colonel Mohamed Jama, the Base Commander in Bosaso, received the certificate of membership on behalf of the PMPF from Deputy Secretary-General Chris Trelawny. This certificate not only acknowledges the PMPF's commitment to maritime security but also enhances the strategic alliances required to combat modern piracy threats and ensure safe maritime operations in the region.
The Expanded Role of the Puntland Maritime Police Force
Founded in 2010 originally as a counter-piracy force, the PMPF has undergone a significant evolution in its roles and responsibilities. The force's mandate now extends beyond counter-piracy to encompass aviation security, maritime security, and internal security operations. This expansion is vital as it allows the PMPF to address a wider array of security challenges facing Puntland and its surrounding waters.
The inclusion of PMPF into the Interport Police framework is expected to foster a collaborative environment where resources, intelligence, and best practices can be shared among member authorities. As the region grapples with various security concerns, the partnership formed on this day promises to enhance not just the operational capabilities of the PMPF but also those of other member authorities within Interport Police, ultimately benefiting the broader maritime community.
Following the ceremony, Deputy Secretary-General Chris Trelawny took the opportunity to meet with PMPF aviation security personnel at Bosaso Airport. This interaction highlights the importance of integrated security measures, proving that air and maritime security are interconnected realms requiring comprehensive strategies and training.
As we look towards a future of collaborative security efforts, the Interport Police welcomes the Puntland Maritime Police Force with open arms, anticipating a fruitful partnership that seeks to promote safety and security across the region’s maritime domains.
